Deputy Sheriff: Within an established chain of command on an assigned shift, enforces controlling federal/state statutes and County ordinances designed to protect life and property within County boundaries; operates motor vehicle during day and night in monitoring events, situations and occurrences which require appropriate law enforcement action; interacts with all kinds of people in providing information, issuing citations, warnings, and arrest warrants, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes.

APPLICATION AND TESTING PROCEDURES FOR THE POSITION OF DEPUTY SHERIFF WITH JASPER COUNTY

NOTICE: Physical fitness testing, written exams, and oral interviews will be administered for all non-certified candidates.

Iowa Certified Officers in good standing are NOT required to take the physical agility testing.  Certified Officers WILL be required to complete the written exam (P.O.S.T.) should one not be on file within one year of the testing date.

Iowa Certified Officers who successfully complete the Civil Service testing will be considered for a lateral entry position which can include a higher starting wage and additional vacation.  Lateral entry position offers include up to a $5,000 bonus upon successful completion of the Jasper County field training program.

Current Hourly Pay Scale: $28.56 to $37.54 per hour (effective 7/1/24)

Testing activities will begin promptly at 7:30 AM on June 29, 2024 at the
Jasper County Armory Annex Building at 1030 W. 2nd St. S. in Newton, Iowa.


Previous POST exam scores will be accepted if taken within the last year from JCSO's current testing date.
There will be a $25.00 fee for the written P.O.S.T. exams; payment is due the morning of the testing.

Please bring your Driver's License with you the day of testing.

Interviews will be the same day as testing.  Following a successful completion of both the physical agility testing procedures and written examination, all remaining applicants will be interviewed.  Applicants should plan to spend the entire day, possibly into the evening if necessary, involved with such commission activities as exam, physical testing, and interview.
Please bring the appropriate clothing/footwear for all aspects of the process.

The written P.O.S.T. examination, personal interview, background investigation, and physical ability test (for all non-certified applicants) are mandatory for all persons interested in qualifying for inclusion on the eligibility list for the position of Deputy Sheriff in Jasper County, Iowa.  Other minimum qualifications/standards are set forth in Iowa Code Chapter 80B and in rule promulgated there under by the Iowa Law Enforcement Commission as published in chapter 501 of the Iowa Administrative Code.

Before beginning such process, interested persons MUST complete and return to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office a written application (Jasper County Civil Service Application) for position of Deputy Sheriff, NO LATER THAN 4:00 PM ON FRIDAY JUNE 14, 2024.
