Permit to Carry New & Renewals

Permit to Carry Weapons

New Permits

  • Must have taken a certification class (within 24 months of application) or Military DD214 with honorable discharge (bring a hard copy of the certificate or DD214 with you)
  • Must present driver's license or state-issued ID with current address
  • Complete Permit to Carry Application — check new on application
  • Must pass a background check
  • $50.00 for 5 year Permit to Carry

Renewals

  • 60-day window
    • Apply 30 days prior to expiration date to 30 days after expiration date to qualify for renewal price*
    • Anything outside the 60-day renewal window will be considered a new Permit to Carry)
    • *Note: the date printed on the permit is the date it expires. There is no grade period.
  • No new certification is required if the previous permit was issued on or after 1/1/2011
  • Must present driver's license or state-issued ID with current address
  • Complete Permit to Carry Application - check renewal on application
  • Must pass a new background check
  • $25.00 for 5 year Permit to Carry (If outside 60-day window $50.00)

Duplicates

Duplicates are for lost or damaged permits, address changes, or name change requests.

  • Must present driver's license or state-issued ID with current address
  • Complete Permit to Carry Application - check duplicate on application
  • Must pass a new background check
  • $25.00 for the remainder of the permit term

Transfers to Jasper County

Transfers are for those coming from another county.

  • Must present permit from the previous county
  • Must present driver's license or state-issued ID with current JASPER COUNTY address
  • Complete Permit to Carry Application - check duplicate on application
  • Must pass a new background check
  • $25.00 for the remainder of the permit term

Hours & Payment

Our front office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It does take a few minutes to take in applications. Please allow us about 10-15 minutes and plan your arrival time at our office accordingly. No appointments are required.

Our office takes checks, cash, or credit/debit cards. If cash, the exact amount is preferred. If we do not have change on hand, you will have to return with the exact change.

Permit printing is now standardized and will be printed at the state level. Permits will be mailed to applicants. Per the Iowa Code, the Sheriff has up to 30 days to approve/deny permits.
