Winter Operation Facts
Winter Operation Facts
- Paved Routes are the first priority for the following reasons:
- Provide city to city connection
- Provide connection to primary (state) routes and interstates
- Serve a larger population and area
- Facilitate travel across the County
- Gravel Routes are the second priority for the following reasons:
- Provide a connection to a paved route(s)
- Serve a smaller population and isolated areas
- Motor graders are used at times to get paved routes open quicker or for breaking through drifts.
- Plow trucks are not used on gravel routes as they are not as maneuverable nor as functional as a motor grader.
- Did you know..
- The blade on a plow truck goes up and down, pivots side to side, and raises up and down, however it cannot apply down pressure to engage the road, whereas on a motor grader the underside blade can go about any direction you can imagine and can apply down pressure giving it an incredible ability to conform to the shape of the gravel roads.
- A motor grader can use its underside blade to lift itself out of ditch and get itself back on the road. A plow trucks gets in the ditch, and they typically are not going to get out with some assistance. Again, making the motor grader better suited for the gravel routes.
