COLLABORATIVE & STRENGTH-BASED COUNSELING

REDISCOVERING THE LOVELINESS WITHIN

Hello. I am passionate about facilitating a transformative process for people to reconnect with their essence, sovereignty, and capacity to make empowering choices.  Rooted in mindfulness, self-compassion, and body-centered approaches, my work supports individuals as they navigate both the unique and universal challenges of being human in today's complex world.  Together, we nurture greater inner clarity, ease and vitality—drawing on the integrated wisdom of both mind and body.   At the heart of my work is a commitment in building strong therapeutic relationships where  clients feel deeply seen, heard, and supported.  I am especially attuned to internalized patterns and narratives that shape present experience.  Through collaboration, we bring compassionate awareness to underlying survival habits and cultivate practical, personalized skills that foster meaningful change.

I bring over 20 years of experience as a licensed mental health professional, working with adults from all walks of life.  My clinical expertise spans a wide range of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, bipolar affective disorder, etc.  I also support clients through diverse life experiences including adjustment to life changes/transitions, aging, attachment patterns, disability, education and vocational endeavors, family of origin issues, food and body image concerns, health challenges, identity, loss and grief, parenting, relationship dynamics, trauma, and more.  I am deeply humbled and inspired by the wisdom and resilience my clients  reveal through our open dialogue and authentic connection.

Red Couch Counseling - Erik Kohl

I am currently taking new clients in Grinnell office located on the college campus. Next day appointments are often available and I can accommodate evening and Saturday appointments. I utilize a client-centered approach to therapy and prefer to focus on strengths and solutions rather than dwelling on problems. I focus on the therapeutic relationship as the means of implementing change. As a clinician I take environmental, relational, and emotional factors in to account during treatment. My goal is to help you move forward with your life and equip you to manage your mental health on your own.
I work with children, adolescents and adults. I operate from a Trauma informed care model with experience treating PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral, Dialectic Behavioral, EMDR, and solution based therapy interventions to empower you to maintain your mental health.

I believe in the importance of holistic health care so I am willing to collaborate with professionals from other fields. I have experience working with school counselors, primary care providers, and professionals from other mental health organizations to help provide resources you may need during treatment.

The Mental Health Coalition

Therapy in Iowa Jeff Wells

Cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses on the fact that what we are thinking dramatically impacts how we feel.  While circumstances matter and stressors are real, we often exacerbate our emotional pain by thinking in unskillful ways.  Common mental mistakes include jumping to conclusions, all or nothing thinking, arguing with reality, and disporportionate self-criticism.  When we are able to divest from these ways of thinking,  we descrease our unnecessary suffering , become more able to manage life's ups and downs, and have greater capacity to experience peace and happiness.

The fact is that life happens in one place and time - Here and Now.  In order to live fully and to increase our skillfulness in the areas we value, there is no way around the need to live more fully in the present.  Using breathwork, body awareness, and other mindfulness practices, this becomes a way of life rather than a set of techniques.

Life is amazing and we are fortunate to get to live it.  However, it is also very difficult.  Navigating the demands of daily life, coming to terms with the givens of existence, and surviving more extreme stressors require skill, courage, and tenacity.  As part of self-development practice, I encourage people to become more physically and mentally fit.  Having a greater capacity to handle adversity helps us to be more relaxed in the present, less worried about the future, and more able to be a resource for others through difficult times.

Having and maintaining healthy boundaries with others is a core life skill.  It requires knowing how we feel, what we are OK with or not, and being able to communicate our wants and needs to others.  Feeling better emotionally, having healthier relationships, and being able to communicate assertively are interrelated.
