Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health

The Great Plains Center is funded by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).  The NIOSH Agricultural Centers were established as part of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) / NIOSH Agricultural Health and Safety Initiative in 1990. The Centers were established by cooperative agreement to conduct research, education, and prevention projects to address the nation’s pressing agricultural health and safety problems. These centers provide research and outreach to protect workers employed in the agriculture, forestry and fishing (AgFF) sector.

Geographically, the Centers are distributed throughout the nation to be responsive to the agricultural health and safety issues unique to the different regions.  Visit the CDC/NIOSH web page to learn more about other centers, and view the map below to see all current AgFF centers throughout the country.

Al-Anon

Our personal situations may be different, but we share as equals because of what we have in common: our lives have been affected by another person’s drinking. Al-Anon is a mutual support group.

We can find understanding and support when we share our common experience with each other. Some of us are here because a spouse or partner has struggled with alcoholism. For others, the problem drinker is a parent, child, or grandchild. Sometimes a brother, a sister, or some other friend or relative brings us to Al-Anon. Many of us have had more than one alcoholic family member or friend.

Alcoholism has similar effects on us all, even though our relationships to the alcoholic may be different. Many newcomers are most interested in hearing about situations and relationships that are similar to their own. Over time, however, we come to understand that we can benefit from hearing how the Al-Anon principles worked in many different circumstances.

Alcoholics Anonymous

A.A.’s Twelve Steps are a set of spiritual principles. When practiced as a way of life, they can expel the obsession to drink and enable the sufferer to recover from alcoholism.

The Twelve Traditions apply to A.A. as a whole. They outline how A.A. maintains its unity and relates itself to the world around it.

The book Alcoholics Anonymous describes the A.A. program of recovery. It also contains stories written by the co-founders and stories from a wide range of members who have found recovery in A.A.

Bed Bug Information from IHHS

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small insects without wings. At one time they were almost eliminated from the United States. However, currently are found in all 50 states including Iowa. Bed bug bites usually will cause large itchy welts on the skin. These welts may not appear for 24 to 48 hours after the bite. Bed bugs are not known to spread disease. Currently there are no programs to assist with bed bug infestations at the state or federal level, however local resources may exist to assist homeowners faced with this issue.

Care Package Project

The main focus of our year is the annual holiday care package drive. Since 2017, more than 2000 boxes have been sent to deployed servicemen and women around the world. This is a painstaking process for our small group of volunteers, as we not only collect the items for the boxes but must also raise the funds for the postage.

Hot Rods for Heroes

The 4th annual "Hot Rods for Heroes" car show is on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DMACC in Ankeny (Lot L - 2006 S Ankeny Blvd.) All proceeds benefit the Blue Star Mothers of Iowa and their annual project to send care packages to Iowa troops serving overseas

Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa

The mission of the Brain Injury Association of Iowa is to create a better future through brain injury prevention, advocacy, education, research, and support.

Resource Library

Our Resource Library is designed to provide you with a comprehensive collection of materials and tools tailored to support survivors, caregivers, and professionals.

Brain Injury Resource Facilitation

Brain Injury Resource Facilitation is a fee-free service offered by the Brain Injury Association of Iowa to help people with brain injury and their families, caregivers, and community navigate medical and general life challenges after a brain injury.

We offer support in coping with the issues of living with brain injury and transitioning back to work and the community, and we help connect individuals and families with the services and supports they may need. Support is provided in a variety of forms, including:

  • Providing brain injury specific information and resources
  • Enhancing natural supports and providing linkage to appropriate supports, services, and community resources
  • Providing training to service providers to increase Iowa’s system capacity to provide appropriate services
  • Accessing, securing and maximizing funding, both private and public
  • Sharing the Iowa Brain Injury Resource Network Tote Bag, which contains important brain injury information and information on various services and supports for individuals and families experiencing brain injury.

Support Groups

Our support groups are where individuals can connect, share experiences, and find encouragement. Together, we provide understanding, resources, and community to help one another navigate challenges and celebrate successes. All support groups meet in person or virtually.

Iowa Brain Injury Resource Network

We strive to continually expand Iowa’s capacity to serve individuals and families experiencing brain injury, and to increase the number of access points where people can get consistent, reliable information and referrals to get the assistance or care they need. IBIRN member sites receive monthly communication about BIAIA services and supports, updated resources, training opportunities, and the opportunity to participate in our Brain Injury Tote Bag Program

Bridges of Iowa

Residential Treatment

The program begins with highly structured, supervised residential treatment that consists of:

    • Group therapy
    • One-on-one counseling
    • Health & Wellness
    • Community service
    • Support groups including AA/NA, SMART Recovery and Celebrate Recovery

Halfway House Treatment

The Middle Phase entails clients taking on more responsibility and accountability while also gaining more freedom. This is the part of the program where they become employed. In this phase we help clients with:

    • Resumes
    • Interviewing skills
    • Transportation
  • We work with a multitude of local employers to help clients:
    • Find a job
    • Maintain that Job
  • We administer trust accounts for all our clients that help:
    • Manage their money
    • Save money for graduation and becoming self-sustaining.
  • Bridges of Iowa accepts individuals directly into our halfway house treatment program. Participation in our high-intensity residential treatment is not required for admission into this level of care.

Outpatient Treatment

This last phase of our program is when clients move out of our residential facility and into their own living arrangements where they:

    • Continue their treatment in our outpatient program in the East Village which includes:
      • Weekly group therapy sessions
      • Monthly individual counseling sessions.
      • Compliance with weekly drug testing
    • Bridges of Iowa accepts individuals directly into our outpatient treatment program. Participation in our residential treatment is not required for outpatient admission.

Graduation

Upon completion or graduation from our program, our clients are:

    • Clean and sober for nearly a year or more
    • Employed and contributing financially to a portion of their treatment costs
    • Participating in a sober support network through, family, friends,12-steps, church, and other groups.

It is obvious to see how our long-term continuum of care truly prepares them for success.

We conduct bi-monthly graduation that include brief speeches from graduates and their families and conclude with a “crossing the bridge” ceremony.

Mission: To provide individualized services to children and adults with intellectual or mental health disabilities…helping them obtain greater independence in their community through living, learning, and doing.  CIRSI believes that every person is entitled to dignity and respect, regardless of disability.  CIRSI endeavors to provide support, empowerment, and services that uphold each person’s dignity and respect the uniqueness of each individual.  We all have strengths and needs; it is inherent in being human.  We also have the right to make choices and decisions regarding how we utilize our strengths and meet our needs.  We believe people have the ability and motivation to learn and grow at their own pace, in their own way.

Two main programs offered: In-day and home-based.  The In-day program’s focus is on goal and support related activities (i.e. social skills, communication skills and/or behavior management).  The program provides a daily structure centered around three areas of focus: (1) Physical (exercise and self-care), (2) Mental (abilities and well-being), and Social/Recreational (crafts, relaxation/leisure and community integration).  Home-based habilitation is designed to assist/instruct individuals in adaptive skill development, assistance with activities of daily living, community inclusion, transportation, adult education, social and leisure skill development, personal care and protective oversight and supervision.

Christmas Support for Kids in Jasper County

Circle of Freedom

Our residential recovery home offers women a safe place to get grounded in their faith, find Christ-centered solutions to addiction, and begin life reestablishment.

Our home provides for up to 10 women.  The program is divided into phases with each phase bringing more independence, responsibility, and preparation towards life outside the home.  In each phase, the women work through an individualized study plan using curriculum developed by Adult and Teen Challenge USA (with a 65 year history of positive outcomes and radical life transformation in their centers across the US and Canada). Women also receive practical life-skills training in areas like developing/restoring healthy relationships, parenting, communication, financial management, cooking, and cleaning. Students are required to follow “house rules” and a daily schedule including work therapy, Bible Study, Chapel time, group activities, class time and homework assignments. Completion time varies depending on the individual but ranges between 12 and 15 months.  In later phases, women get outside employment while still having the accountability of living at the home.

Covert Action

Covert Action Treatment Facility is a private drug rehab specializing in treating drug and alcohol addiction in Des Moines, Iowa. Since 2006, this addiction treatment center has followed practices outlined by Dr. Christopher Covert that focus on treating opiate addiction and dependence.

With more than 4,000 individuals receiving treatment at this center, it has become a well known rehab with one of Iowa’s highest rates of patient sobriety. As such, it’s unsurprising that it operated a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program. To learn more about this program, read below:

The medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program offered at this addiction treatment center helps patients reach sobriety and stability quickly. This program aims to help individuals eliminate opioid dependence and addictive behaviors through one-on-one and group counseling, and FDA-approved medically monitored medication dispensation.

At this rehab center, qualified healthcare professionals administer Suboxone and Methadone to qualifying individuals. With the help of these drugs, patients can deal with withdrawal symptoms and cravings in a safe environment. In addition, the Covert Action Treatment Facility team creates individualized treatment plans based on the patient’s needs. This ensures relapse prevention.

Empowerment Command Center (Grinnell)

GRINNELL, Iowa, May 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Central Iowa Shelter & Services (CISS) and Iowa Total Care will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Empowerment Command Center and Affordable Housing Project on Wednesday, May 21 at 11:00 am at 306 6th Ave., Grinnell.

The Empowerment Command Center is a portion of a 2-year $2.55 million commitment to CISS by Iowa Total Care and the Centene Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Centene Corporation.

This momentous project represents CISS' commitment to addressing the urgent needs of rural Iowans facing homelessness and housing instability. The Empowerment Command Center will provide essential services, including job training, veterans' resources, case management, health and wellness support, and pathways to permanent housing. By establishing this center, CISS aims to eliminate the obstacles that residents of Poweshiek County currently face when needing to travel to urban centers for these vital services.

"Our research identified Grinnell as a place in need of services and support for individuals experiencing housing challenges," said Melissa O'Neil, CISS CEO. "The opening of our newest Empowerment Command Center in Grinnell reflects our dedication to extending efficient and effective solutions to homelessness into rural communities while fostering stability and empowerment."

"Iowa Total Care and the Centene Foundation know by addressing the critical link between healthcare and other factors like housing, we can leverage partnerships and local services to create and implement sustainable solutions for vulnerable populations, while fostering healthier communities. We are proud to support and partner with CISS on the Grinnell Empowerment Command Center and help support innovative solutions for rural Iowans," said interim Iowa Total Care Plan President & CEO, Bryan Sanders.

Modeled after the successful Empowerment Command Center in Des Moines, this initiative will bring critical resources closer to the community and facilitate a more supportive environment for individuals seeking assistance and utilizing existing resources. A dedicated team of case workers and advocates will ensure that residents receive tailored support and comprehensive care.

Additionally, the project will introduce four affordable housing units in Grinnell, addressing the significant gaps in housing availability. Funded through grant allocations, local support, and private financial contributions, these units will serve as a lifeline for those who may not qualify for traditional housing options.

CISS invites community members, stakeholders, and advocates to join in this pivotal occasion. Your presence can help amplify the message of support and commitment to those in need.

First home program - Iowa Economic Development Authority/ Iowa Finance Authority

The FirstHome Program connects first-time homebuyers with affordable mortgages and local lenders.

Benefits to FirstHome

  • Interest Rates
Interest rates are typically lower than the market rate and have fewer fees. A credit score does not affect the interest rate.
  • Down Payment
The loan type determines the amount of down payment. Loans may require only a 3% down payment and may include reduced mortgage insurance coverage for borrowers with the lender’s qualifying income of less than 80% of the Area Median Income. Down payment and closing cost assistance programs are available to help cover upfront expenses.
  • Free Iowa Title Guaranty Owner's Certificate
Borrowers may request a free Iowa Title Guaranty Owner’s Certificate at closing. With this certificate, if a title issue arises, Iowa Title Guaranty will be there to step in and assume attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses associated with defending the title to your home. While title defects are not common in Iowa, they do occur. At no cost to you, an Iowa Title Guaranty Certificate is more than worth it.

Eligibility

  • Household Income Limit
Varies by county and household size and ranges from $96,500 to $134,550.
  • Home Purchase Limit
$510,000—may be up to $624,000 in targeted areas—use the Eligibility Quick Check below to determine if the home is located in one of the targeted areas.
  • Real Estate History
Must be a first-time homebuyer. A first-time homebuyer is defined as not owning your primary residence in the last three years.
    OR
Be a military member with discharge of other than dishonorable and not previously used a mortgage revenue bond program such as FirstHome to finance a home purchase.
    OR
Purchase a home in a Targeted Area (please use the Eligibility Quick Check tool to determine if you’re purchasing in a Targeted Area).
  • Occupancy
The home must be occupied by the buyer as a primary residence within 60 days of closing.
  • Credit Score
All loans subject to a minimum 640 credit score. For cases where borrower has no credit score, non-traditional credit documentation allowed in accordance with agency guidelines for loan type.

Food establishment inspection reports (Restaurants)

  • Inspections are a "snapshot" of the day and time of the inspection. At the time of the inspection, violations are recorded, and often corrected on the spot, before the inspector leaves the facility. Inspections are conducted by the Department of Inspections and Appeal's Food Safety Specialists. A uniform training program is utilized for all inspectors following national standards. The frequency of inspections varies depending on many factors including the type of food, food preparation, and handling and compliance history of the establishment. In addition, inspections are conducted before opening, upon complaint, and as a follow-up to ensure previous violations have been corrected.
  • The State DIAL performs restaurant inspections in Jasper County.

HUD Des Moines Field Office: Lead program

Income-based rental programs.

PROGRAMS DIVISION - LEAD-BASED PAINT & LEAD HAZARD REDUCTION DEMONSTRATION GRANT PROGRAMS

The purpose of the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control (LHC) and the Lead Hazard Reduction grant programs (LHRD) is to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in eligible privately owned housing for rental or owner-occupants. The Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant program is the largest program in terms of dollar amount and number of grants. The main distinction between the two programs is that the LHRD program is targeted to urban jurisdictions (either alone or through a consortium) that have at least 3,500 pre-1940 occupied rental housing units, while the LBPHC program is open to all jurisdictions, urban, suburban or rural. Also, the requirement for grantee match is higher (25% vs. 10%) for the LHRD than for the LBPHC program. Both programs have a stellar track record across the country. Funding opportunities are published in the annual Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) and are available online.

InfantSEE program

InfantSEE ®: Establishing a Lifetime of Healthy Eyes and Vision

Cooing, sitting up, and crawling are all signs that a baby is growing. But, did you know that a baby's vision has stages of development too? Signs marking vision development are often less noticeable even to parents, teachers, and other health care providers. That's why the American Optometric Association recommends scheduling an infant's first eye exam around six months of age, immediately after the eye undergoes rapid and profound changes and is therefore most vulnerable to interference with healthy development.

InfantSEE, a public health program, managed by Optometry Cares - The AOA Foundation, is designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an integral part of infant wellness care to improve a child's quality of life. Under this program, AOA member optometrists provide a no-cost comprehensive eye and vision assessment for infants 6-12 months old regardless of a family's income or access to insurance coverage.

While many parents may think that a vision screening is enough, a study funded by the National Eye Institute found that even the most sophisticated vision screening tools, administered by the most highly-trained vision screeners, will miss one-third of children with an eye or vision disorder.[i] InfantSEE provides early intervention using necessary specialized equipment and procedures - which are not available as part of most vision screenings. During an InfantSEE assessment a doctor of optometry will test for excessive of unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, eye movement ability, eye health problems, and discuss patient and family history. Comprehensive eye and vision care is important to detect problems early to ensure babies have the opportunity to develop the visual abilities they need to grow and learn.

Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition

IHRC works to create health equity in Iowa communities through advocacy, education, and drug user health services.

We are committed to building power among people impacted by the war on drugs, including people who use drugs and communities of color; committed to acceptance of stigmatized and minoritized peoples and people who use drugs; and committed to dismantling systems of race, class, and gender-based privilege.

Health & Social Services

Using a drug user health framework, IHRC provides comprehensive health and social services to people who use or inject drugs.

Services prioritize the unique health concerns of people who use drugs, including overdose prevention, prevention of disease transmission, treatment for substance use dependency, and homelessness. IHRC utilizes a harm reduction model and meets participants literally where they're at, offering services in multiple low-barrier settings, including home deliveries, mobile outreach, and office-based services.

IHRC offers services in four metro areas and 23 of Iowa's 99 counties. We are consistently expanding our services and service area, and we offer groups of individuals the opportunity to bring harm reduction services to their community by implementing chapters of the Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition.

IHRC's service portfolio can be divided into two programmatic areas: overdose & infectious disease. All services offered are centered on the prevention and treatment of overdose and infectious disease. With regards to overdose, services include overdose prevention training, naloxone distribution, intensive patient navigation for linkage to care, and engagement in peer recovery support services. With regards to infectious disease, services include counselling, education, and distribution of materials for the prevention of viral, bacterial, and fungal infections associated with drug use (emphasizing HIV, hepatitis C, abscess, bacteremia, and endocarditis); HIV and hepatitis C testing; wound care; and patient navigation and intensive case management for linkage to care for hepatitis C.

Risk Reduction Kits
We offer safer injection and risk reduction kits, which include cottons, cookers, ties, sterile water, antibiotic wipes, vitamin C, band-aids, and condoms. By improving access to these materials, we help people who inject heroin, meth, and other drugs reduce their risk of contracting HIV and hepatitis C.

Naloxone Kits
Naloxone is the life-saving medication used to reverse an opioid overdose and is also commonly known as Narcan. We provide free naloxone kits and training on naloxone use to individuals, families, and organizations, and do not require a prescription or insurance.

Syringe Clean Up
Used syringes are often found in public spaces and construction sites throughout Eastern Iowa. We provide free syringe clean up and disposal of sharps upon request via our hotline, (319) 214-0540.

HIV/HCV Rapid Testing
IHRC provides free HIV and hepatitis C rapid testing. Tests can be administered anywhere, anytime, and are available at IHRC’s office, via outreach locations, or can take place in an individual’s home.

Hotline
We operate a 24-hour hotline to answer questions related to safer injection, vein health, and wound care. We also schedule supply mailings, deliveries, and drop-offs through this number.

To schedule or request a supply mailing or delivery in Iowa City or Cedar Rapids, please call (319) 214-0540. For access in Des Moines & Central Rapids, please call (515) 957-1252. Please note that we are unable to provide comprehensive medical advice through this hotline. In case of an emergency, please call 911.

Fentanyl Test Strips
Because fentanyl increases the risk of overdose when present in heroin, meth, and cocaine, we provide drug testing materials that allow participants to test their drugs. Drug testing allows individuals to make informed decisions about their use and to reduce the risk of overdose.

Linkage to Housing & Homelessness Services
For individuals experiencing homelessness, we provide linkage to supportive services and rapid re-housing programs.

Linkage to Substance Use & Drug Treatment
Because treatment can be difficult to access in Iowa, we work with individuals to help them gain access to local methadone and suboxone treatment programs, also known as MAT, for opiate dependency.

Patient Navigation for Hepatitis C
We provide linkage into care and patient navigation services for individuals living with hepatitis C. Because receiving curative hepatitis C treatment is a complicated process, we offer patient navigation services primarily for individuals enrolled in IA Medicaid.

Virtual Overdose Prevention Site
For people using drugs by themselves, IHRC offers a courtesy call or safety check system. Send a text message with your address and location to our anonymous hotline (319-214-0540) and request a safety check within a certain number of minutes. If you do not answer a phone call at that time, we will alert emergency medical services. If you’d like someone to stay on the phone with you, you may call the number above.

Rural Naloxone Access
IHRC mails naloxone around Iowa through the national naloxone mailing system, NEXT naloxone. Request a kit through NEXT, our website, or our hotline. IHRC also provides naloxone training to farmers, agricultural workers, and people working in Iowa feedlots to expand overdose prevention to rural communities in our state.

Sex Worker Support
IHRC provides outreach services to people engaging in club-based and full-service sex work. Services include access to condoms & lube, Narcan distribution to local clubs, and non-judgmental and confidential counseling. Have a bad date? Call or text IHRC to help us share information about bad dates to keep others in the sex work community safe.

AED Placement Program

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) strikes more than 350,000 Americans each year — nearly one death every two minutes. Giving CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) early doubles the chance of survival. For each minute without such treatment, the chance of survival decreases by 7–10 percent.

The Iowa Heart Foundation awards AEDs to increase survival rates for people who experience SCA.
